By 2025, all private commercial and multifamily buildings in Washington DC over 10,000 square feet are required to comply with the DC Clean Energy ACT.
By April 1st of each year, these buildings must report their annual energy and water consumption to the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE). Benchmarking and reporting is done using a free tool from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) called the Energy Star Portfolio Manager.
While the DC Clean Energy ACT has been in effect since 2018, its requirements are being phased in over a period of time. Originally only buildings larger than 50,000 square feet were required to comply. In 2022, compliance and benchmarking requirements apply to all 25,000 squared feet and larger.
